Apple Officially Launched iOS 14 With New Features on Eligible Devices

At the ongoing WWDC 2020 Apple introduced the most expected iOS 14, the next iteration of iOS with a lot of new features. The iOS 14 brings new ways to customize the Home Screen, discover and use apps with App Clip, updates to Messages, and more.

Widgets are also more data rich and now come in a variety of sizes. The Today screen isn’t going away, but you have the option to use widgets on your regular home screens as well now.

App Library

App Library, a new space automatically organizes all of a user’s apps into one simple, easy-to-navigate view, and intelligently surfaces apps that may be helpful in the moment. It also has a folder with suggested apps and recently added ones for easier access.

Picture-in-Picture

Picture-in-Picture is now baked into iOS for videos and FaceTime calls. The function works like on Android.

Picture – Picture

Play a video in an app, use the Home gesture, video continues playing in a PiP window, which you can move around or dismiss when you don’t want it around anymore.

App Clips

App Clips, which seem similar to Android Slices, let you download a portion of an app, rather than the entire program. Users will scan a QR code to download the specific function they need. You can discover an App Clip by scanning a new Apple-designed App Clip code, or through NFC tags and QR codes, or by having them shared in Messages, or from Safari.

Apple Messages

Messages app now handles 40% more messages than a year ago, as well as twice as many group messages.

Apple Messages

It gets some updates too, like pinning people up top in your conversation list, mentions and inline replies in group threads, and new styles for memoji (including face masks and more age groups).

Car Play

CarPlay will let you make your iPhone your car key, starting with the new 2021 BMW 5 series. This works through NFC, you tap the phone to the door to unlock, then place it on the charging pad in the car and hit the start/stop button and you’re on your way.

You can share a car key through iMessage, including with a restricted driving profile (for the teenager in your life). This will also work in iOS 13.

Siri

Siri now has a more compact design, showing the animation in the bottom part of the screen, and giving you cards up top. It no longer has a full screen UI which covers up whatever you were doing when you called her up.

Siri also has twenty times more facts now than three years ago, and gets a translation function that seems like a Google Translate clone.

iOS 14 Eligible Devices

iOS 14 will be available for  iPhone 6s and later and iPod touch (7th generation) in the fall, which is around September. iOS 14 beta 1 for developers is already available and the public beta will be available next month.

Newly Launched App From Facebook That Will Make You stop Buying Airtime

Facebook has finally given you a reason to stop buying airtime with the newly launched application Catchup.

Facebook has launched yet another service that helps bring people to stay in touch during this era of social distancing. This time, it is an audio-only calling app called Catchup, developed by Facebook’s NPE Team. The app has a unique feature of showing when a user is available to take calls.

Users on Catchup can make calls 1-on-1 or group calls with up to 8 people. Creating a group is extremely simple and starting calls is a one-button tap. Another feature in this app is that it uses the user’s phone contacts instead of their Facebook contact. This means a user can call anyone, including people who do not have any Facebook account.

Talking about the app’s uniqueness, Facebook is trying to solve the issue of people hesitating to call their friends and family because they are worried about disturbing them. The app solves this by indicating who is ready and available to take calls right in the opening screen of the app.

Based on our studies, we found that one of the main reasons people don’t call friends and family more frequently is that they don’t know when they are available to talk or are worried they may reach them at an inconvenient time. Says FB

Facebook is testing the app by launching it in the US only for a limited period on both iOS and Android. We can assume that once testing is over, Facebook will roll out the app globally. Available for download on the App stores.

Since it is being tested in the US for a limited time, expect it to roll out a few weeks from now once testing is complete.

Apple is Reportedly Designing its 5G Antenna For 2020 IPhones

Apple's iphone 5g antenna

Apple is planning to produce its own new 5G iPhone, according to Fast Company. This has come as a result of Apple not being satisfied with the existing Qualcomm QTM 525 millimeter-wave antenna module existing 5G design. Qualcomm will still take charge of the 5G modem chip, but the antenna module is what Apple will be handling. The source also suggested that a mock-up from Apple required twice the battery power as a comparable antenna.

Primarily, two major factors gave rise to this decision. Firstly, Qualcomm’s 5G antenna comes in a big size, which means this will force Apple into going for a big design and look. Secondly, Apple will have to pay Qualcomm more for them to get its components. As a result, this will add to the cost of the device when launched.

This is not the first time that Apple will be designing their antenna. It first happened in the year 2012 when the iPhone 4 device was launched. It came along with the company’s own antenna. The outcome was not what users expected as there was an issue with the reception being weak when held in some way that covered up the antenna. Apple had to resolve this, after admitting there was a problem with the sensor and that the problem will be rectified. They also said that those who faced the antennagate issues could avail a free bumper, and if they had already purchased a bumper, the price of the bumper would be refunded.

All things being equal, this plan will be of an advantage to Apple as they will not have to rely heavily on Qualcomm for any future production. Though it should also be noted that it may still take some time before they begin to produce products of Qualcomm’s standard.

PUBG MOBILE ERANGEL 2.0 MAP UPDATE

PUBG Mobile has been pushing out new updates for some time now. The recent one in the corner now is the update on the much popular Erangle map, which was first teased during the PMCO 2019 Spring finals in Berlin. A short video showed just a few of the places where visual updates were offered and that was all. However, it appears that Tencent is preparing to launch the map update soon.

The popular PUBG Mobile Youtuber Wynnsanity has uploaded a video on the Erangel 2.0 update. The video debuted in the Chinese version of the mobile game called Game for Peace. He also gave us a peek into the new Erangel map in the video.

In the screenshot that was leaked, the new Erangel map is getting updates across the landscape with multiple bridges and rivers. The map formally had two islands, but it now looks like it will be surrounded by a landmass around the edges with a river flowing between the mainland and the northern region has a snowy mountain.

The Erangel 2.0 map

With the new update that is on course, players will be allowed to choose the classes of characters before going out in battle. Each class appears to have a special ability, including a grappling hook to tie buildings or structures to quickly cross the map. We also saw a player throwing a dart at an eliminated teammate who brought them back into action.

Going to the end of the video, Wynnsanity also showed more places that were being changed, including Prison, Quarry, Pochinki, Mylta Power, Military Base, etc. It is unclear whether the new class system, if any, will be added as a separate mode or in classic mode, the former being more likely. The date at which the update will start to roll out is still unknown but we should be expecting some news on that in the coming months as the trailer has already landed in China.
